Discover Somerset coast

Somerset’s coast mixes traditional resort days with harbour towns and the edge of Exmoor. Minehead, Watchet, Burnham-on-Sea and Weston-super-Mare are different bases, connected by a shoreline shaped by large tidal changes.

Give each outing a clear focus: promenade time, a heritage train, harbour browsing or a separate Exmoor day. This coast is not one continuous swimming beach, and tidal mud requires particular care.

Three ways to discover Somerset coast

Choose a starting point, then take the day at your own pace.

Seaside

Minehead

Explore the promenade and resort before heading into the surrounding countryside. It makes a useful starting point for a holiday mixing seaside days and Exmoor outings.

Harbour towns

Watchet Harbour

Wander the small harbour town and look into its local heritage and arts spaces. Check current visitor opening before planning around smaller attractions.

Out in the open

A breath of fresh air

Burnham coastal exploring

Use signed routes and local advice when exploring the shore. Do not walk out over mud or assume exposed sand remains safely accessible as the tide changes.

When the weather turns

Local museums and arts

Look into the current programme in Watchet or Minehead for a mixed-weather plan. Smaller venues need an opening check rather than an assumption of daily access.

A little less obvious

A longer Watchet pause

Give the harbour town time for its streets and arts setting, rather than treating it as a photograph stop on the way to Minehead.

There’s more around the corner

Exmoor — Valley of the rocks, Exmoor, 16 March 2012

Exmoor

Exmoor mixes open moor, wooded valleys and a dramatic coast around small towns and villages. It is a place for carefully chosen walks, harbour-side stops and evenings that feel far removed from the busiest resorts.

Dartmoor — DARTMOOR HAYTOR 05

Dartmoor

Granite tors, open moor and wooded river valleys make Dartmoor a dramatic change from Devon’s coast. Its villages and visitor centres also offer a gentler way into the landscape than a demanding cross-moor walk.

Fishing boats and colourful buildings around Weymouth Harbour

Weymouth

A sweep of golden sand, a harbour full of colour and plenty to discover beyond the promenade. Weymouth is made for seaside holidays that mix lazy beach mornings with proper days out.

A little planning goes a long way

Good to know before you go

Planning your visit

Follow local warnings about mud, tides and swimming suitability. Confirm the journey between your park and Exmoor; a coastal Somerset address does not place the caravan inside the national park.

Access, opening & seasonal changes

Check current attraction opening, detailed accessibility information and local restrictions for your dates. Ask the operator about any particular needs before booking rather than relying on a general destination description.
